The Design Approach
For larger projects, I often develop the design in stages, combining rough concepts, freehand composition and prepared elements.
Here’s an example of how one project developed from the initial idea to the finished tattoo.
01 - Initial Concept
The first rough sketch exploring the overall idea and composition, based on your idea.
02 - Freehand composition
Drawing the composition directly on the body with markers to establish the flow, scale and placement.
This is usually done during an in-person consultation before the first tattoo session. We can also test the placement of prepared design elements to see how everything fits together on the body.
03 - First Session: Stencil & Placement
Refining the composition and positioning the prepared design elements on the body.
04 - First session: Gray Linework
Once the placement is finalized, I establish the main structure of the tattoo with gray linework during the same session.
05 - Shading Development
Planning the next stage over a photograph of the existing tattoo.
06 - Finished Tattoo
The completed composition, showing how the original idea developed into the final piece.
Most larger projects are completed over several sessions. How many sessions are needed depends on the size, complexity and direction of the design.
We can adjust the schedule and session length to make the project manageable financially and comfortable to work through.
The Booking Process
01 - Send your idea
Tell me about the project, placement and general direction. You can also include reference images and photo of the placement.
02 - Video consultation
If the project is a good fit, we’ll schedule a short video call to discuss the concept, scale, placement, timeline and overall direction.
03 - Deposit & Design
Once we decide to move forward, the deposit secures the project and appointment. I’ll then begin developing the design.
04 - In-Person Consultation & Tattoo
For larger projects, we’ll meet before the first tattoo session to work on the composition directly on your body, finalize the placement and prepare the design for tattooing.
I’ve been tattooing for over 10 years, and most of my work has developed around geometry, ornament, blackwork and larger compositions.
Before tattooing, I studied architecture and interior design, and that still influences how I think about structure, patterns, proportions and the way a design fits into a space. With tattooing, that space is the body.
I’m constantly experimenting with new ideas and trying to develop my style further, combining geometric structure with more organic forms and different types of patterns. I especially enjoy projects where the client gives me enough freedom to build something specifically for them and their placement.
